The Commonwealth Games Are Coming To Glasgow

This summer, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will bring together thousands of elite athletes, volunteers and excited spectators to join an incredible festival of sport and culture. From 23 July to 3 August 2014, the eyes of the world will be on Glasgow as it hosts the XX Commonwealth Games. A modern city of culture and sport, forward-thinking and creative, Glasgow is one of the UK’s largest cities and has a lively heart and warm people.

The Commonwealth Games have been a permanent fixture in sport since the first was held in Canada in 1930.

Edinburgh played host to the Games in both 1970 and 1986 in which Scotland won gold medals in the men’s and women’s 10,000 m respectively. Now it’s the turn of Glasgow to welcome athletes from around the world as they compete for medal glory across 17 sports.

Another opportunity is to witness The Queen’s Baton Relay which is making its way around 70 nations and territories on its epic journey to the Opening Ceremony of the Games. The baton returns to the UK in May 2014, and there are plenty of ways you can help welcome it throughout various commnities in the United Kingdom.
