The atmosphere is designed to be elegant with the Terrace restaurant set with candlelit tables. Beautiful linen, crockery and silver cutlery are an integral part of the refined experience at this hotel. We love the hotel’s latest addition – the Muse Champagne Room by Perrier-Jouët and adjoining Courtyard are the perfect place to retreat and enjoy a sundowner.

Each opulent suite is spacious and individually decorated with a working fireplace, internet access, under floor heating and air conditioning. The large en-suite bathrooms boast a jacuzzi bath with a separate shower. Lounges can be fully separated from bedroom area. All of the suites overlook the beautiful landscaped gardens.

The Blue Train

Since its inception in 1946, it has become synonymous with the ultimate in luxury and personal service. Perhaps the best way to see the ever changing landscapes of South Africa, the train allows you to sit back and soak up the splendour of this diverse and interesting country. All suites have en suite facilities with a choice of bath or shower and are air-conditioned. On board, there is a separate dining car and lounge. Dress code on board the train is smart-casual during the day but a jacket and tie are compulsory for gentlemen in the evening. Ladies dress elegantly for dinner.

The Blue Train’s most popular journey is between the jacaranda city of Pretoria and the mother city of Cape Town, however it can also be privately chartered to other destinations for special groups and celebrations. There are two train sets to ensure there are regular scheduled departures. They are very similar in décor but have a slightly different composition. Train one sleeps 80 guests and train two 52. Both benefit from the latest suspension system which offers one of the smoothest rides that can be found on any train anywhere in the world.

Sabi Sabi Selati Lodge, Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Sabi Sabi’s intimate all-suite Selati Camp, furnished with a historic Railway theme and 19th century charm, meticulously created as an authentic home in the bush, is the most unforgettable of all African experiences. The railway theme extends from original steam engine name plates, signals and other memorabilia in the lounge, to collector’s pieces in each room and shunter’s lamps lighting the way to the suites. Originally created without electricity to preserve the ambience, Selati Camp now has overhead fans and air-conditioning, while the camp is still lit at night by the gentle flicker of oil lamps, the warm glow of fires and the spectacular canopy of the Southern night sky.

There are eight luxury thatched suites, each with full bathroom and private alfresco shower, blend perfectly into the surrounding bush. Home-cooked cuisine is served on decks built over the river-bed, in the open air “boma” or in the “farmhouse kitchen”. For travellers who desire privacy and space choose the Ivory Presidential Suite. It offers turn of the19th century colonial grandeur in the form of original antiques, a draped four-poster bed, private terrace, and fireplace. The magnificent en-suite bathroom, complete with Persian carpet and antique chaise-longue, also features a very private pool as well as private safari activities. Selati combines turn of the century elegance with an exceptional personalised safari experience.

Sanctuary Markanyane, Madikwe Game Reserve

Designed by a team of award winning architects, the key focus was for the lodge to blend in with nature – this has been achieved with great success. Sanctuary Makanyane lies hidden in the lush river-side forest of the Madikwe Game Reserve. Situated on 1,800 hectares of private ground within Madikwe’s 75,000 hectares, the lodge affords spectacular views over the tranquil Marico River.

The main lodge building, set on the edge of a ravine with views down to the waterhole has a wonderful thatched roof supported by ancient leadwood trees. The lounge has two enormous rock fireplaces and opens out onto a huge wooden deck, with spectacular views of the bush and a well stocked bar. Eight suites are linked to the main lodge via shaded winding pathways. Glass walled suites allow uninterrupted views of the river and surrounding bush, as do the sizeable private sundecks. Lavish bathrooms benefit from free standing baths, heated floors and indoor and outdoor showers.

Guided game drives and walks through some of the reserves 75,000 hectares are sure to unveil a vast array of incredible wildlife. Alternatively sit and observe from one of Makanyane’s two bush hides.Tucked away in the forest, a spa and gym are always on hand to offer tired travellers a little pampering, or to work up an appetite for a sumptuous dinner. Priding itself on fine cuisine, executive chef, Mauritz Greeff, and his excellent team blend European and African flavours, using only the freshest of produce.
