4 Bedrooms/8 people/ Siena
This beautiful house is located in the external walls of the ancient hamlet of Strove, which was once fortified and dates back to an Etruscan settlement. Situated in the Chianti Colli Senesi hills, very near the Via Francigena route that pilgrims to Rome used, it was later transformed into Roman “castrum” and again served military functions in the medieval wars between Florence and Siena. The walled fortress town of Monteriggioni, which dominates the surrounding countryside, is close by, as is the town of Colle di Val d’Elsa with shops, restaurants and a 6-hole golf course. The hamlet has a basic food shop and a restaurant.
The house is bordered on either side by other buildings, all set into the walls of the hamlet. The first historical mention of the structure dates back to its destruction in the 14th century. Rebuilt in the 17th century, it became an aristocratic family residence and the family of the current owners purchased it in the 1800s. There is a circular road which runs around the outer perimeter of the hamlet and, being only used by hamlet residents, it is very quiet. Across this road and facing the house, there is a spacious 5000 square metre garden with parking space and a private swimming pool (14 x 7m). Olive groves, vineyards and wheat fields surround the garden and there are wonderful views over the countryside to Monteriggioni, San Gimignano and the Chianti hills. By the pool there is a shower room and changing room and, within the garden, there is also a barbecue and outdoor dining area, ideal for use on summer evenings, as there is lighting in the garden.
Entrance to the house is through a wrought-iron gate and a pathway leading up to a lovely furnished terrace just outside the house, overlooking the larger garden below. The rooms have been decorated and furnished to a high standard, with beautiful antique pieces and are very comfortable. The windows are fitted with mosquito screens and further amenities include satellite television, portable stereo and DVD player, 2 baby cots and a high chair. There is a cook available who offers cooking lessons (sample menu available on request) and will also prepare breakfast and dinner. These services must be reserved at least one month before travel.
