May 1, Sunday | Athens/Piraeus, Greece (overnight) » | Embark pm
Piraeus is Greece’s largest port and has been a gateway to the Mediterranean since 482 BC. It lies on the innermost point of the Saronic Gulf and is a short drive from Athens, the cradle of Western democracy and culture. Throughout the ages, Athens’ lofty Acropolis has been a source of inspiration. The ancient ruins scattered throughout this legendary city are reminders of Greece’s great cultural heritage.
May 2, Monday | Athens/Piraeus, Greece » | 6 pm
May 3, Tuesday | Patmos, Greece » | 7:30 am | 9 pm |
Considered the ” Jerusalem of the Aegean,” the Greek isle of Patmos has a rich Christian heritage. The Monastery of Saint John was founded in 1088 and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, as is the Cave of the Apocalypse, the grotto where John the Apostle received the visions he recorded in the Book of Revelation. The Patmian School, a noted Greek seminary, is also located on the island. Deep Christian roots make Patmos a destination for pilgrims, while the island’s white-sand beaches, secluded coves and beautiful marina make it a popular destination for worshippers of the sun.
May 4, Wednesday | Rhodes/Lindos, Greece » | 8 am | 7 pm |
Best known of the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes is rich with natural beauty, architectural variety and colorful history. The city of Rhodes is architecturally one of the most varied in Europe. Hellenistic, Byzantine, Medieval and Turkish architectural styles freely intermingle. Sunshine and dry air combine to cast such a magnificent light over the island that the ancients dedicated Rhodes to Apollo, the God of Light.
May 5, Thursday | Mykonos, Greece » | 7:30 am | 6 pm |
Mykonos, a former 18th-century pirates’ bastion, is now a sophisticated and cosmopolitan island resort. This quintessential Greek island offers a maze of winding streets, graceful windmills, inviting beaches, domed churches and whitewashed houses accented in blue. Dotting the waterfront are cafés, taverns and tempting shops. Guests may spend the day exploring the island independently. Feel free to investigate its fine boutiques and pleasant, labyrinthine streets. For helpful hints or suggestions on things to do while you are ashore, please contact the onboard Shore Excursions staff.
May 6, Friday | Santorini/Thíra, Greece » | 7 am | 10 pm |
Of all the Cyclades Islands, Santorini is often considered the most dramatic. Once an active volcano, it was known as Stongyle, or the Round Island. In about 1500 BC, the volcano erupted with such force that the center of the island literally exploded, leaving the haunting submerged crater into which Crystal sails. The island’s small villages were preserved in the ashes and recent excavations have uncovered a fascinating view of everyday life from 3,500 years ago. Santorini’s dark landscape offsets its simple, yet refined Cycladic buildings, which glimmer in the sunlight. The rich volcanic soil is ideal for grapes and the local vines produce a cherished crop known for its “special volcanic taste.” Thíra, or Fira Town, is laid out along the edge of a cliff that partially forms the rim of the now extinct caldera. A picturesque site, it exudes charm and an atmosphere of leisure that can be attributed to the easy-going Greek lifestyle.
May 7, Saturday | Navplion, Greece » | 8 am | 5 pm |
When in Greece, do as the Grecians do: Go to the Peloponnese. Connected by a narrow isthmus (it’s less than four miles across at its narrowest) off the southern end of central Greece, the Peloponnese is a large peninsula with many things going for it. Not only are there fewer crowds than on the Aegean islands, it has just as many–if not more–ancient sites, including the temples at Nemea and Olympia. On the sunny east coast of the Peloponnese, tucked away in a deep bay, is the city of Navplion. As Greece’s first capital after the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s, Návplion has its share of history, including two Venetian fortresses and many neoclassical buildings. But in fact, Navplion is the more modern side of Greece — a relaxed and appealing place with leafy parks, small museums, picturesque streets and lively outdoor cafes.
May 8, Sunday | Kefalonia/Argostolion, Greece » | 9 am | 5 pm |
The largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece, Kefalonia has its share of natural wonders and interesting history. In the wonders category are Melissani, an underground lake with gorgeous, deep blue water; the island’s numerous beaches, which are some of the most beautiful in the world; and Drogarati Cave, a showcase of stalactites and stalagmites that have been forming for thousands of years. Historically, the island has been in under French, Ottoman and British rule, and was occupied by Axis powers during World War II. Also seminal to Kefalonia’s past was the quake of 1953, a 7.3 trembler that destroyed virtually every house on the island. Today, Kefalonia is emerging as a vacationer’s paradise. The island and its capital of Argostoli draw people from far and wide with pleasant weather, a picturesque bay and the Koutavos Lagoon, a feeding ground for Loggerhead turtles.
May 9, Monday | Crotone, Italy » | 8 am | 6 pm |
Located down south on the ball of the foot of the boot of Italy, Crotone is as connected to Greece as it is to its own country of Italy. In fact, Kroton, as it was known in the days of ancient Greece, was a colonial outpost of Magna Graecia, and was even home to Greek mathematician and metaphysician Pythagoras. The sum of Mediterranean beauty and ancient history equals a traveler’s paradise, as your call will soon prove. A wide stretch of beach and many significant buildings and archaeological finds are all within a stone’s throw. The Cathedral, a 16th-century gem with a neo-classical design encrusted with Baroque interior decoration, deserves a visit. On a small island just off the city’s coast sits Le Castella, a castle that can be reached by foot along a narrow causeway. At Capo Collano Archaeological Park, you’ll see remnants of defensive towers and the solitary Doric column, virtually all that remains of a temple dating to the 5th century BC.
May 10, Tuesday | Cruising the Ionian Sea »
May 11, Wednesday | Sorrento, Italy » | 7 am | 7 pm |
As your ship approaches the Sorrento Peninsula, delight in craggy cliffs draped with flowing pink blossoms. Renowned for its serene way of life, this romantic port exudes a special magic. Its dramatic bluffs and surrounding flowered hills bid travelers welcome to a town overflowing with charm and character. It is easy to relax in this languid southern Italian atmosphere. The sensational Amalfi Coast and the haunting ruins at Pompeii are among the region’s highlights.
May 12, Thursday | Rome/Civitavecchia, Italy (overnight) » | 7 am
Civitavecchia was founded by Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century. Today this port is noted for its fine seafood and attractive monuments. Located 90 minutes away is the Eternal City of Rome. Steeped in 2,500 years of history, Rome was for many centuries the center of Western civilization. It was both the focal point of the Roman Empire and of Christendom. Landmarks such as the Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Spanish Steps are reminders of the legacy of its rich past.
