Date Port Arrival Departure

Jan 5, Tuesday

Miami, Florida, USA »   7 pm
It has the largest city population in Florida, is the third most visited American city among international travelers and showcases an Art Deco Historic District encompassing one of the largest neighborhoods entered on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Miami certainly boasts its share of impressive characteristics, even before adding to the list its gorgeous beaches, spirited Cuban population and ritzy enclaves of Coral Gables and Coconut Grove.

Miami wasn’t always the glamorous and energetic city you see today. Until the late 1800s, it was mostly swamp, disconnected from the rest of the country thanks to its position on the edge of the continent and lack of the essential link of the day: a railroad. All that changed in 1896, when the railroad in northern Florida was extended to the latent tropical paradise of the south.

The rest, as they say, is history, as Miami has since seen recurrent booms fueled by surges of immigration, perennially good weather and an insouciant refusal to do anything halfway. Admire the full glory of Miami Beach with a stroll along South Beach’s famous Ocean Boulevard, where splendidly restored art deco buildings compete with fashion models and sun worshipers for attention. For a taste of Cuban cuisine and culture, visit Little Havana on the mainland (Miami Beach is separate both in its municipality and its geography: it sits on a barrier island four miles off the coast, and is reached by a causeway). Also outside mainland Miami are the acres of rare tropical plants nurtured to their fragrant and beautiful best in Fairchild Tropical Gardens. The aforementioned slice of heaven known as Coral Gables lies to the southwest. A gem of 1920s city planning, the city unfurls impressive boulevards and features the alluring Venetian Pool, where waterfalls and underwater caves offer the chance for a uniquely refreshing dip.

Jan 7, Thursday

Turks & Caicos/Grand Turk, UK » 9 am 5 pm
Although there are numerous spots on land that invite relaxation and exploration, the Turks and Caicos are really all about the water. More specifically, they’re all about what’s beneath the water. These islands have some of the best diving and snorkeling anywhere, courtesy of one of the world’s largest network of coral reefs, easily accessible off the islands’ shores. One reef, aptly called the Wall, is particularly spectacular; it drops 7,000 feetstraight down. Between the shore and the reef, the water is only waist deep, providing a perfect place for beginning snorkelers to get their feet wet.

Jan 9, Saturday

Santa Marta, Colombia » 10 am 6 pm
A rich history is exists in Santa Marta, Colombia, revealed in the massive, whitewashed cathedral, which is the country’s oldest, and in the founding of the city itself, which dates to 1525, making Santa Marta South America’s oldest city. A faded colonial heritage is being brightened with a refurbishment of the colonial district, while Simon Bolivar’s revered status as Latin America’s hero of independence is forever enshrined at the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, the hacienda where he spent his last days.

You will want to spend every moment you can discovering the city’s historical sites and beautiful location. The fashionable beach resort of El Rodadero beckons from the south. From the north, the fishing village of Taganga invites a visit. Farther up the coast, the protected coastline of Parque Nacional Tayrona summons trekkers and nature lovers to marvel at views of the world’s tallest coastal mountain range and glimpse the area’s wildlife.

Jan 10, Sunday

Cartagena, Colombia » 7 am 4 pm
Charming Cartagena is one of the most fascinating towns in South America. The old city, almost completely surrounded by lagoons, bays and the Caribbean Sea, is still girded by its 17th-century fortifications. Once these guarded the gold and treasures of the New World, bound for Spain; now they shelter ornate churches and convents, the dramatic Palace of the Inquisition, and other historic gems.

Jan 11, Monday

Colon, Panama (overnight) » 9 am
The history of Colon is punctuated by busy years of construction to facilitate travel. First were the Panama Railroad and the carving out of a quick route for the California Gold Rush. Then, most enduringly and famously, came the Panama Canal, begun by the French in 1881 and completed by the Americans in 1914. In recent years, Colon has been energized by two more commercial endeavors: the Zona Libre, or Free Zone, established in 1948 and still the largest free-trade zone in the Americas, and Colon 2000, the multi-million-dollar cruise-ship port that welcomes visitors with shopping and dining amenities. Just six miles south of Colon are the impressive Gatún Locks and Gatún Dam, where ships enter and exit the Panama Canal on the Caribbean side. Natural wonders include what is perhaps the Caribbean’s best-known and most appreciated attribute: turquoise waters that offer outstanding diving and snorkeling.

Jan 12, Tuesday

Colon, Panama »   5 am

Transit the Panama Canal  »
Spend an unforgettable day cruising the Panama Canal, a fifty-one-mile waterway through the rainforest that is one of the world’s engineering masterpieces. The ship glides down the canal with inches to spare, through locks that raise and lower it like a toy. Along the way it crosses enormous Gatun Lake, and the amazing Gaillard Cut, blasted out of a solid mountainside.

Jan 14, Thursday

Caldera, Costa Rica » 6 am 7 pm
Superlatives abound when describing Costa Rica, one of Latin America’s most peaceful countries. Often called the “Switzerland of Central America,” it does not possess an army and boasts a stable democratic government as well as a high literacy rate. Strategically located between two great continents, it has been the benefactor of great cultural contributions from each. In addition to discovering its fascinating traditions, visitors to Costa Rica will be welcomed by friendly people and will enjoy superb scenery and an ideal climate.

Jan 15, Friday

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua » 8 am 6 pm
Once a sleepy fishing village, San Juan de Sur has been energized by the discovery of its charming, crescent-shaped bay, excellent surfing and fishing, and authentic, laid-back culture. Vacationers certainly appreciate this slice of Pacific Coast paradise, strolling along golden-sand beaches and streets lined with wooden buildings painted in vibrant colors. What continues to make San Juan del Sur special is that it still retains its quiet side, with the town belonging mostly to the locals during the week and morning wake-up calls still being provided by the neighborhood rooster. Hammocks and sunsets are the way of life in San Juan del Sur, where the hilltop statue of Christ of the Mercy gazes upon the bay, like Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, but on a much smaller scale.

Jan 19, Tuesday

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico » 9 am 5 pm
Embraced by rugged tropical mountains on one side and the beautiful Banderas Bay on the other, Puerto Vallarta is second only to Acapulco when it comes to the Mexican Riviera’s leading resort cities. White stucco houses are capped with red-tile roofs and surrounded by bougainvillea-lined cobblestone streets. Native women who beat their laundry along riverbanks as busy fishing boats return to port illustrate a lifestyle that has been maintained for decades. Nearby, sophisticated restaurants, luxury hotels, smart boutiques and lively nightclubs bear testament to the changes wrought on this quiet seaside city since the 1960s. Life here has never been quite the same since the filming of the movie “Night of the Iguana” and the worldwide publicity accorded the romance of its stars, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Puerto Vallarta brims with life. Shop for leather goods, shell and silver jewelry, hand-embroidered blouses or painted figures from Oaxaca. Explore cobblestone streets and picturesque alleyways filled with the scents and bustling energy of Mexico.
