Golf Courses
Wairakei International Golf Course
The Wairakei Geothermal Park is a place of majestic beauty. It was against this impressive backdrop that leading British Golf Course Architect Commander John Harris saw potential to create a championship golf course like no other.
Skirting the edges of active geothermal fields he used the volcanic contours to sculpt fairways, elevate tees and greens and bury hazards within the natural landscape.
It was the New Zealand Government’s Tourist Hotel Corporation who in 1970 commissioned Wairakei as a green fee facility for all to enjoy, but to ensure the course met the rigorous standards of full world class championship competition Commander Harris also employed the services of Mike Wolveridge and one of the great playing professionals Peter Thomson, five time winner of the British Open. Together they succeeded in creating New Zealand’s first truly great championship golf course and a golfing experience that remains unique to this day.
The Kinloch Golf Club
Ranked in 2013 in the Top 100 in the World by Golf Course Architecture Magazine, The Kinloch Club was also rated on opening in 2007 as the top new golf course outside North America by the prestigious US Travel and Leisure Golf Magazine.
The par 72 eighteen hole Championship golf course measures:
- 6734 metres (7363 yards) from the Tournament tees.
- 5961 metres (6519 yards) from the White tees.
- 4640 metres (5072 yards) from the Red tees.
The Kinloch Golf Club is the only golf course in New Zealand designed by Jack Nicklaus, Nicklaus (The Golden Bear) visited Kinloch to oversee construction of his signature Championship golf course and returned to The Kinloch Club in February of 2008 to play the course for the first time.

Hilton Lake Taupo
Nestled amongst the epic scenery of Taupo on New Zealand’s North Island, Hilton Lake Taupo was originally built in 1889 as The Terraces Hotel and is only a 15 minute drive from the centre of Taupo.
The Terraces Heritage Wing features private balconies that offer views of Lake Taupo and thermal valley. The newer wing of Hilton Lake Taupo offers self-contained apartments and guest rooms with sweeping views of Lake Taupo or Onekeneke Thermal Valley.
