Colonial mansions and religious buildings sit atop Inca foundations, narrow alleyways lined with giant stones open onto beautiful squares. Fascinating museums packed with treasures alternate with chic cafes. Enjoy an afternoon sightseeing tour with Jorge Escobar Medrano—Cuzco Cathedral Curator and Chair Professor of History at UNSAAC (National University of San Antonio Abad of Cuzco), a respected anthropologist, archaeologist and historian. Marvel at the impressive Inca masonry, not least the monumental zig-zag stone walls slotted together like a giant jigsaw puzzle. Lunch today is at the innovative MAP Café at the Pre-Columbian Art Museum. Enjoy the museum’s excellent displays of everything from ancient pottery to Inca gold. Explore the streets of Cuzco, dominated by dramatic Inca walls. A light, early lunch is served. From Aguas Calientes station, a 25-minute bus ride brings you to the breathtaking Inca citadel. Encircled by tropical mountain forest, Machu Picchu sits in an extraordinarily beautiful environment.
